After working as an importer and distributor for 17 years, Donato went back to school to earn an MBA degree with an emphasis in both Marketing and Finance at the University of Phoenix. During the 17 years as a distributor Donato worked his way up to an Executive VP position in the family business, Southwestern Ceramic Tile and Marble Co. in San Diego, CA. There he ran the operations and sales divisions of the large ceramic tile and stone distribution company. Following that experience, Donato joined Laticrete International, a global manufacturer of installation systems for ceramic tile and stone, and worked for Laticrete for over 7 years as a sales manager. Donato had extensive experience at Laticrete conducting presentations for sales, marketing, and training. In addition, Donato was significantly involved in investigating and resolving job problems. Donato is certified as a Ceramic Tile Consultant (CTC) and is the past chairman of the CTIOA Technical Committee, and he is a member of the ANSI and TCA standards committees. Donato is a Council-certified Microbial Remediator (CMR), Donato is an architectural CSI member and is certified as a Construction Document Technologist (CDT). Donato is a member of the Forensic Consultants Association (FCA). Donato is a past board member of the Ceramic Tile Distributor Association CTDA; a primary contributing writer and researcher for the Catalina Stone Industry Report, and is a frequent author and speaker for the ceramic tile and stone industries. Donato is an active member of ANSI A108, APSP Association of Pool & SPA Professionals, CSI (Construction Specifications Institute) member, ASTM C18 Dimension Stone committee, CTDA (Ceramic Tile Distributors Association) member and Chairman of the CTDA Education Committee, CTIOA (Ceramic Tile Institute of America) member and is the past Chairman of the CTIOA Technical Committee, FCA Forensic Consultants Association member, FEWA Forensic Expert Witness Association, IAPMO Uniform Plumbing Code member, IAQA (Indoor Air Quality Association) member, ISO TC189 committee, MIA (Marble Institute of America) member, NTCA (National Tile Contractors Association) member and a member of the NTCA Technical Committee, a NTCA Recognized Consultant, particpant in the TCNA Tile Council of North America Handbook committee, Tile Heritage Foundation member, and WSCTA (Western States Ceramic Tile Association) member. Donato Pompo
- Donato Pompo has over 30 years of experience in the ceramic tile and
natural stone industry which he offers to the clients of the Floor
Covering Institute. He is President of Ceramic Tile and Stone
Consultants (CTaSC) a consultancy comprised of accomplished ceramic
tile and stone installers, construction scientists and other industry
specialist located throughout the U.S. He has experience as an
installer, as a tile distributor and importer, as a manufacturer of
installation products for ceramic tile and stone, and for the last eight
plus years as a forensic investigator, expert witness, quality control
consultant and trainer. Donato is the past chairman and current
member for the Ceramic Tile Institute of America (CTIOA) Technical
Committee, a member of the Marble Institute of America (MIA) and
Building Stone Institute (BSI). He participates in the Tile Council of
North America (TCNA) Committee, and sits on the ASTM C18 Stone
Committee as well as the ANSI A 108 and ISO TC-189 Committees. He
is a member of the National Tile Contractors Association (NTCA)
Technical Committee. Donato is a Certified Microbial Remediator (CMR),
a Certified Document Technologist (CDT) through the CSI architectural
organization, and a Ceramic Tile Consultant through CTIOA. He has a
biochemistry education with MBA degree.

Donato: Early on in my career I started out as a union installer,
learning the nitty-gritty of how to install tile. Looking back, this was
very good preparation for what was to come next in my life. I joined
my family’s business in San Diego, working my way up to executive
vice president of a successful importing, distributing and retail
ceramic tile and stone business. I worked closely with architects,
installers and general contractors, educating them about our
products and assisting them to design installation systems.
Eventually my interest in the latter led me to my next career move.
I continued to provide architects, builders, dealers and installers
with technical consultation, but this time I was working with
Laticrete, a leading international manufacturer of installation
products and systems for ceramic tile and stone. Here I wrote
installation specifications, developed and implemented training
programs, managed a large sales force, developed and
implemented marketing plans and promotions, and investigated and
resolved many installation failures. We were one of the first
companies to target and work with floor covering distributors and
dealers to help them learn and sell ceramic tile. My tenure with this
multinational corporation lasted seven years.
The idea of establishing my own business had always been brewing
in my mind; this last rung of the career ladder cinched it for me. I
decided to pursue my goal to create a company where I would be
able to channel all the knowledge and education I had gained over
the years about ceramic tile, stone, installation systems, and
business in general. I knew there was a need for consultancy in the
industry since I had witnessed firsthand the enormous cry for help
during earlier years of my work experience with all types of
companies and individuals who were frustrated and desperate with
job problems, and marketing and business challenges. It was then
that Ceramic Tile and Stone Consultants was born!
Today my business is divided into three main categories: the
consulting on job installation failures and the services related to
avoiding those failures, education/training, and business and
marketing planning services. Learning what causes failures and
how to avoid them is the focus of the forensic part of the business.
The training arm of the company is called the University of Ceramic
Tile and Stone (UofCTS). I have always believed that education and
training is key to being successful in business. Helping your
employees to grow will grow sales and profit. I developed a series
of instructive cartoons in the late 80's called TileWise to help

technology that higher learning institutions use where self-paced

sales techniques, and business training, which are relevant to the

covering industry in general is unwavering. I sincerely believe that
information and education is a must in this age where the customer
expects and oftentimes insists on being informed. Research,
education, and planning are the key operatives for avoiding
